What is Fractional Kelly?
Betting a fraction of full Kelly to reduce variance and protect against estimate error.
Definition
Fractional Kelly stakes (Half, Quarter, Tenth) cut the full Kelly recommendation by 50%, 75% or 90% to reduce drawdowns. The trade-off: lower long-term growth rate (Half-Kelly grows at ~75% of full Kelly's rate) for materially lower variance. Pros also use fractional Kelly because their probability estimates are imperfect — over-estimating an edge by even 1% with full Kelly can lead to ruin in unfavourable streaks. Quarter-Kelly is the most common pro setting.
Example
Full Kelly says stake 8% of bankroll. Quarter-Kelly = 2% — same edge, much smoother equity curve.
