What is Line Movement?
A change in the odds or spread after a market opens, driven by betting volume, sharp action, or news.
Definition
Line movement is the bookmaker's real-time adjustment of their odds in response to incoming bets or external information (injuries, weather, team news). When sharp money arrives, the line moves quickly — sometimes within seconds — as books try to balance their exposure and incorporate the new probability signal. Reverse line movement (line moves against the majority of public bets) is a classic tell for sharp action: if 70% of public bets are on Team A but the line shortens Team A, sharp money is on Team B. Tracking line movement is a core tool for serious bettors to identify where the smart money is going.
Example
Chiefs -3 opens Monday. By Friday it's Chiefs -5.5. 75% of bets are on the Chiefs — but the line moved toward them, not away. Reverse line movement = sharp action on Chiefs.
