What is Fractional Odds?
Traditional UK odds format expressing profit relative to stake (e.g. 5/1, 7/2).
Definition
Fractional odds (e.g. 5/1, read as 'five to one') show pure profit per stake unit. A 5/1 winner returns 5 units of profit plus the original stake back. Convert to decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator and adding 1: 5/1 = (5/1)+1 = 6.00. UK and Irish bookmakers default to fractional, but every regulated UK book lets you switch to decimal for clearer comparison.
Example
Fractional odds of 7/2 on England mean a $20 stake returns $20 + ($20 × 7/2) = $90. Decimal equivalent is 4.50.
