    What is Vig (Vigorish)?

Same as juice — the bookmaker's built-in commission expressed as a percentage.

    Definition

Vig is the formal name for the bookmaker's commission, derived from the Yiddish word for winnings. On any two-way market, calculate vig as: (1/odds_a) + (1/odds_b) − 1. A market with both sides at 1.91 has vig of 4.7%. Beating the vig long-term is the entire challenge of profitable sports betting — it's why pros line-shop, use exchanges, and prefer sharp books with thinner margins.

    Example

    Both sides of a coin flip priced at 1.91 / 1.91 means vig = (1/1.91)+(1/1.91)−1 = 4.7%. The fair line is 2.00 / 2.00.
